IPTV on Mac comes down to two good options and a handful of "it depends." IPTV Smarters Pro has an official macOS app that gives you a proper guide, on-demand library and catch-up, and takes about five minutes to set up. VLC — which you may already have installed — plays your M3U link in thirty seconds with no guide at all. Beyond those two, the Mac picture is patchier than Windows or Android: IBO Player Pro has no macOS version, TiViMate is Android-only, and some iPhone and iPad players run on Apple Silicon Macs while others don't. This guide sorts out what actually works on macOS in 2026, walks through the setup for each, and covers the Gatekeeper and playback problems people run into.

ZyroTV is an IPTV provider, so the steps below are the ones our support team gives Mac users, tested with our own Xtream login and M3U link. Every player here uses the same credentials, so you can try more than one; the IPTV player guide compares the full list across every device if you want the wider view.

What works on macOS — and what doesn't

Before installing anything, here is the honest map. The table saves you the twenty minutes many people spend hunting for a Mac version of an app that has never had one.

IBO Player ProNo macOS appWindows desktop, TVs and mobile only——
TiViMateNoAndroid and Android TV only——

Two clarifications people ask for. IBO Player Pro's developer lists Windows (via the Microsoft Store), Samsung, LG, Android, Fire TV and Apple mobile devices, but no macOS build — on a Mac, install our IBO Player Pro guide's recommendation on your TV instead and use Smarters on the laptop. TiViMate is built on Android's media stack and has never shipped for macOS, iOS or Windows; anything claiming to be "TiViMate for Mac" is not the real app and should not be installed.

IPTV Smarters Pro for macOS: the full setup

Smarters is the closest thing to a complete IPTV app on a Mac: a grid TV guide, movies and series sections, catch-up where the server supports it, multiple accounts and an external-player option. The macOS build is distributed as a .dmg from the official IPTV Smarters website rather than the Mac App Store, which means one extra security step on first launch. For the app's menus, EPG settings and favorites once you are in, our guide on how to use IPTV Smarters covers everything in depth; the install guide for every device has the same login flow on phones and TVs.

  1. Download the macOS installer from the official IPTV Smarters website's download page. Choose the macOS .dmg — not an Android or Windows file — and download it only from the developer's own site, never from a third-party "free download" mirror.
  2. Install it. Open the .dmg and drag IPTV Smarters Pro into your Applications folder, then eject the disk image.
  3. Get past Gatekeeper. On first launch macOS may say the app "cannot be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software" or that it is from an unidentified developer. Close the dialog, open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll to the Security section, and click Open Anyway next to the Smarters entry. Confirm with your password or Touch ID. You only do this once.
  4. Sign in. Choose Login with Xtream Codes API. Enter any name for the profile, then the username, password and server URL from your ZyroTV activation email. The server URL is the part of your M3U link before /get.php, with no trailing slash.
  5. Load the guide. Press Add User; the app downloads your channel list, movies and series. Open Live TV and, if the guide is empty, choose Install EPG from the settings so the schedule fills in.

💡 Apple Silicon and Rosetta

On an M-series Mac (M1 through M4), if the Smarters build you download is an Intel binary, macOS will offer to install Rosetta 2 the first time you open it. Accept — it is a one-time, automatic step, and the app runs normally afterward. Playback performance is not noticeably affected.

VLC on a Mac: the thirty-second method

VLC is the tool for "does my playlist work?" and for watching a single channel without installing anything new. It has no guide, no categories worth the name and no catch-up, so it is not a daily-driver interface — but it is bulletproof, and it is on half the Macs in the world already.

  1. Install VLC from videolan.org if you do not have it (a universal build runs natively on Intel and Apple Silicon).
  2. Open the network stream dialog. In VLC, choose File → Open Network… (or press ⌘N).
  3. Paste your M3U link — the full get.php…type=m3u_plus URL from your ZyroTV email — and click Open.
  4. Pick a channel. VLC starts playing the first entry in the playlist. Open the playlist window with Window → Playlist (⌘⌥P) to see and search the full channel list, and double-click any channel to switch.
  5. Optional: save it. Use Playlist → Save Playlist to keep a local copy so you can reopen the channel list without re-fetching it, and drag your regular channels into a smaller playlist for quick access.

One VLC quirk worth knowing: the M3U from a large service lists tens of thousands of entries, and VLC reads them all, so the playlist window can take several seconds to populate and the search box is the only sane way to navigate it. That is the price of a player that was never designed for live TV.

Kodi and IPTVnator: two more real Mac options

Kodi runs natively on macOS, including Apple Silicon, and its PVR IPTV Simple Client add-on turns an M3U link plus an EPG URL into a full TV section with a guide, recordings-style timers and channel groups. The setup is more involved — enable the add-on under Add-ons → My add-ons → PVR clients, enter the M3U link as the playlist path and the XMLTV link as the EPG source, then enable Live TV — and Kodi as a whole is heavier than a dedicated player. It is the right choice if you already use Kodi as a media center on a Mac mini under the TV; for everyone else Smarters is quicker.

IPTVnator is a free, open-source cross-platform player with a macOS download on its GitHub releases page. It accepts M3U links and Xtream logins, shows channel groups and a basic guide, and is lighter than Kodi. Being a community project, releases are less frequent than commercial apps and it can lag behind macOS updates, so treat it as a solid second option rather than the first install. Because it is unsigned, expect the same Open Anyway step in Privacy & Security.

iPhone and iPad IPTV apps on an Apple Silicon Mac

Since the M1, Macs can run iPhone and iPad apps from the Mac App Store — but only when the developer has chosen to make them available. Open the Mac App Store, search for a player, and switch the filter from "Mac Apps" to "iPhone & iPad Apps". If a player appears there, install it: it runs in a window, accepts the same Xtream login as on an iPhone, and the good ones (the Apple-native players our iPhone and iPad IPTV guide covers) work well with a trackpad. If a player does not appear, the developer has opted out and there is no supported way to get it on the Mac. Intel Macs cannot run iPad apps at all. This is a nice bonus rather than a plan: check what is available on your machine, and keep Smarters as the baseline.

🔑 Xtream login vs. M3U link on a Mac

Smarters, Kodi's PVR client and IPTVnator all work best with the details ZyroTV emails you, but they want them in different forms. Smarters, XStreamity-style players and most iPad apps take the Xtream login (server URL + username + password). VLC and Kodi's playlist field take the M3U link. Same subscription, two formats — both are in the activation email, so keep it handy.

Watching on the big screen from a Mac

A MacBook is a fine second screen, but most people eventually want the living-room TV. Three routes, in order of how well they work. AirPlay to an Apple TV or an AirPlay-compatible Samsung, LG or Sony set mirrors the Mac's display or, in Smarters, the video itself — simple and reliable on the same Wi-Fi. An HDMI cable (USB-C to HDMI on modern Macs) is the zero-latency option and still the best hotel-room trick. And honestly, if the TV is the main screen, a $30–40 Fire TV Stick with its own player beats streaming from a laptop every time — a stick gets TiViMate and IBO Player Pro, the two apps a Mac cannot run, and your ZyroTV login works there without any changes. Our comparison of which devices support IPTV lays out the options.

✅ Where the Mac is the best IPTV device

  • Working from a desk and keeping a game or news channel in a window
  • Travel — a laptop plus HDMI cable works in any hotel room
  • Testing a new playlist quickly in VLC before setting up the TV
  • Households already invested in AirPlay and Apple TV

⛔ Where it falls short

  • No TiViMate and no IBO Player Pro — the two most polished TV interfaces
  • Smarters is not App Store-signed, so first launch needs Open Anyway
  • Sleep, lid-close and power settings interrupt long viewing sessions
  • A laptop's Wi-Fi radio is usually weaker than a wired box's connection

Troubleshooting IPTV on macOS

These are the Mac-specific issues that come up in our support chats, with the fix that resolves them.

"App can't be opened" / "unidentified developer"Gatekeeper blocking a non-App-Store appSystem Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway, then relaunch
Smarters login fails with correct detailsServer URL pasted with a trailing slash or /get.php attached; or the M3U link pasted into the Xtream formUse only the base server URL; username and password exactly as emailed

Video stutters, audio fineSoftware decoding on an underpowered or Intel Mac, or hardware acceleration disabledIn VLC: Settings → Input/Codecs → hardware decoding on; in Smarters try the alternative player engine
Streams buffer on Wi-FiBandwidth below the ~10–15 Mbps per HD stream (25 Mbps for 4K) floor, or a congested 2.4 GHz networkMove to 5 GHz or Ethernet via an adapter; see our buffering guide
Playback stops when the lid closes or the screen sleepsmacOS energy settingsSystem Settings → Displays → Advanced (or Energy) — prevent sleep while on power, or use an HDMI-connected external display
Everything fails on a VPNVPN server or protocol throttling videoTry a nearer server or disconnect to confirm; our VPN for IPTV guide covers which settings matter

If a stream buffers in Smarters and VLC and on your phone at the same time, the app is not the problem — the connection or the plan's simultaneous-stream limit is. The full diagnostic is in why IPTV buffers and how to fix it.

⚠️ Only download players from the developer

"IPTV Smarters for Mac" and "TiViMate for Mac" downloads on third-party software mirrors are, at best, out-of-date copies and, at worst, repackaged with unwanted software. Smarters comes from the official IPTV Smarters site; VLC from videolan.org; Kodi from kodi.tv; IPTVnator from its GitHub releases. Nothing on this page needs any other source.

What you need before you start

A Mac running a current macOS (Smarters, VLC and Kodi all support Apple Silicon and recent Intel machines), a connection with roughly 10–15 Mbps per HD stream or 25 Mbps for 4K, and a subscription that supplies an Xtream login and M3U link. ZyroTV plans start at $15 for a month on one connection — $30, $45 and $70 for 3, 6 and 12 months — and your credentials arrive by email within minutes of ordering. A connection is one simultaneous stream, not one device, so the same login works on the Mac, your phone and the living-room TV; pick 2 or 3 connections if those will play at the same time. Every plan is covered by a 7-day money-back guarantee, and the channel list shows the lineup before you commit.

Got Smarters or VLC open and waiting for a login? ZyroTV delivers an Xtream login and M3U link by email within minutes — 30,000+ live channels and 120,000+ movies and series on your Mac and every other screen, from $15/month with a 7-day money-back guarantee.
